Off to Rome!

 



Our flight to Rome left Boston at 5 PM on Monday, May 19th. The ride was a little bumpy and hurt Lucy's ears a lot. We watched "Aladdin" and "Young Sheldon" (among other things) on the flight and had a hard time sleeping. But we had a safe landing Tuesday morning.

Vatican Museums: Old Art Aplenty

🖌 🎨 (This is Craig's Dad filling in some of the gaps, though Penny picked out the pictures.) Friday we went to the Vatican Museums. It was hot, and crowded, but otherwise a great experience. The top pic is a selfie in front of Raphael's School of Athens with all of history's great philosophers, Plato and Aristotle at the center. The museum stretches on forever with Roman statues, medieval frescoes (a form of mural painting on wet plaster that is really difficult but spectacular), and even some more contemporary art at the end (like the last painting with the traveling Cardinal and chunky cows). Above is the famous Laocoon where the Trojan priests and his sons are killed by a sea monster for warning his countrymen to not accept the Greek gift of the Trojan horse. Next, Lucy & Penny are in front of Nero's bathtub -- it's huge! There are also amazing tapestries like this one of Jesus, whose eyes follow you across the room.
