First Day Exploring: Pizza & Cats & Gelato, oh my!






 

After a day of overcoming jet lag, getting groceries, and settling in, we started to explore a bit on Wednesday. This is us in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. It was built in 1140 AD, but there's been a Church at this site since 340! We had our first taste of pizza at from the Antico Forno Santini (which has been there over 100 years) then saw some ancient Roman ruins (temples) at the Torre Argentina. There's a cat sanctuary there with over 75 cats! They seem to enjoy walking around the ruins and posing for visitors. We also had our first gelato (Italy's version of ice cream) and learned that Italians like tiny cars -- very cute!

Vatican Museums: Old Art Aplenty

🖌 🎨 (This is Craig's Dad filling in some of the gaps, though Penny picked out the pictures.) Friday we went to the Vatican Museums. It was hot, and crowded, but otherwise a great experience. The top pic is a selfie in front of Raphael's School of Athens with all of history's great philosophers, Plato and Aristotle at the center. The museum stretches on forever with Roman statues, medieval frescoes (a form of mural painting on wet plaster that is really difficult but spectacular), and even some more contemporary art at the end (like the last painting with the traveling Cardinal and chunky cows). Above is the famous Laocoon where the Trojan priests and his sons are killed by a sea monster for warning his countrymen to not accept the Greek gift of the Trojan horse. Mouth of truth and gelato!🩵🩷
